How Defense Base Act Benefits Are Calculated
Under the Defense Base Act, disability benefits are generally calculated as a percentage of your Average Weekly Wage (AWW):
- Temporary Total Disability (TTD): 2/3 of your AWW (approximately 66.67%) per week for the duration of the disability, subject to the national maximum weekly rate.
- Temporary Partial Disability (TPD): 2/3 of the difference between your AWW and your current earning capacity.
- Permanent Total Disability (PTD): 2/3 of your AWW for the remainder of your disability, adjusted annually for cost of living.
- Permanent Partial Disability (PPD): Based on your scheduled or unscheduled permanent impairment, calculated using your AWW and impairment rating.
In addition to disability compensation, the DBA also provides full medical treatment for your covered injury or illness, and death benefits for surviving dependents in the event of a fatal injury.
